In 1995, Bill Gates, one of the co-founders of Microsoft Corp., wrote a memo where he likened the internet to a “tidal wave” that would become essential for all aspects of the company’s operations. Fast forward almost twenty years, Satya Nadella, the current leader of Microsoft, believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will have an equally profound impact.
Satya Nadella discussed this perspective on the latest episode of “The Circuit With Emily Chang.” He mentioned, “The memo Bill wrote in 1995, it feels like that to me. I think it’s just as significant.” One of the key players in Microsoft’s latest transformation is OpenAI Inc., a startup known for its advanced AI technology. This technology has generated substantial interest and led to a $13 billion investment commitment from Microsoft.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, spoke positively about the partnership, highlighting that major collaborations between tech companies often don’t work out well, but this one is an exception. He expressed gratitude for the successful collaboration.
However, there are critics of this alliance, with Elon Musk being the most vocal among them. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but later parted ways due to differences in direction and the inclusion of a for-profit arm, has stated that Microsoft effectively controls OpenAI now.
Responding to questions about Musk’s criticism and the possibility of Microsoft acquiring OpenAI, Altman emphasized, “The company is not up for sale. I can’t be more clear than that.”
Just as Bill Gates’ memo was inspired by the rise of Netscape, the birth of OpenAI and Microsoft’s involvement were motivated in part by concerns about Google’s dominance in AI. Both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing chatbot, known as transformers, share their foundation with Google’s architecture. While Google remains a strong competitor in the AI space, Microsoft and OpenAI are regarded as early leaders. Similar to Gates’ prediction, which led to Microsoft’s web browser outcompeting Netscape and sparking an antitrust lawsuit, OpenAI faces competition in the AI realm. Sam Altman highlighted that the tech environment today is highly competitive.
A spokesperson from Microsoft stated that the company is open to discussions with governments to ensure fair competition in the AI field. During the interview on “The Circuit,” Satya Nadella cautioned that the true impact of AI is still unfolding. He acknowledged the tech industry’s tendency to overhype, expressing his desire to use AI to make technology accessible to everyone, aligning with the core goals of the tech community.
